Government doubled funds for nature protection

The Environment Minister, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, said that in two years the Government doubled the funds allocated to nature protection projects, reaching 8.4 million euros in 2018.

"In two years we have doubled the amount of support given to nature conservation projects. This makes the Environmental Fund an increasingly important tool to support this type of activity, "he said.

"There is a clear strategy for nature conservation and biodiversity in the country, built with great consensus and led by the Government. The Institute of Nature Conservation (ICN) is responsible for this, but it is not possible that this responsibility is only, in terms of concrete actions, in the hands of this public institute. Therefore, the role of local authorities and environmental NGOs is of the utmost importance in order to achieve these projects, " he concluded.
