The biggest challenge of Circular economy

The transformation of a linear economic model to a sustainable model, faces the costs of returning waste to the economy in the form of raw materials, said the president of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA).

Although he argues that the Portuguese economy is "not very efficient when compared to the European average", he foresees the opportunity of the country "to do better in this area".
"The waste sector, for example, has had a very significant evolution, very positive in the last 15/20 years in Portugal. The Portuguese have one of the best treatment and sanitation systems in the world, "he said.

For the president of the APA, the role of the state is to be a facilitator of this process, highlighting in this sense the plan for the circular economy.
"The waste sector will need to adapt to contribute to the circular economy, because the potential exists but the players will have to be guaranteed transparency in access to these materials and this is very important. They have to ensure that the value chain is completely safeguarded, "he concluded.
