Brussels allocates € 243 million for the environment


The European Commission has approved an investment of 243€ million from the European Union (EU) budget for 142 projects under the LIFE environmental program, with 6.4€ million being allocated to Portugal.

Portugal coordinates LIFE projects, with 'Nature and Biodiversity' receiving most of the funding (€ 3.9 billion) for initiatives to protect endemic plants from the risk of extinction in the Azores (LIFE Vidalia) and protection of wolves (LIFE WolFlux).
An amount of 1.1€ million was allocated to a project to reduce the environmental footprint of footwear (LIFE GreenShoes4All) under the heading "Environment and efficiency in the use of resources".The initiative to stimulate water saving in Évora will be financed by an amount of 1.4 million euros.

Out of a total of € 243 million, € 196.2 million is for projects in the field of environment and resource efficiency, nature and biodiversity, as well as environmental governance and information.
