Sustainability and our way of life

The Director of Sustainable Consumption and Production at The Institute for Global Environment Strategies, and Japan's representative for the 10-year UN Sustainable Lifestyles Program, Lewis Akenji, wants to prove that we can all contribute.

He argues that the possibility of recycling 'distracts' consumers from greener strategies in waste management, prompting us to consume more. In his opinion, the only way to have a more sustainable world is by transforming our way of life.

We must realize that companies do not just respond to needs, they also 'build' needs and desires. Therefore, they play a key role in giving this 'push' for society to adopt more ecological and sustainable practices. This also means that companies can lead this 'architecture of choice'. This architecture is extremely important because it is in the hands of companies and their investors to reconfigure the system. Society will go after. On the other hand, we can not be a business if we do not have consumers. We have to force consumers to think very carefully about the decisions they make.

Of course, if all the architecture of all businesses changes so that all businesses are sustainable, consumers will have no choice but to be sustainable. Right?
